Sudor (Sweat): Moisture exuded through the pores of the skin, typically in profuse quantities as a reaction to heat, PHYSICAL EXERTION, fever, or fear.
Inspired by the shapes and forms found in the sweat imprints left on my work garments after arduous shifts at a Michelin Star restaurant SUDOR invites viewers to contemplate the profound connections between labor, creativity, and the human condition, prompting reflection on the inherent beauty found in even the most mundane aspects of our existence. SUDOR offers a poignant commentary on the socioeconomic realities faced by many artists who seek refuge in the hospitality industry to sustain their creative pursuits. Amid struggles with minimum wages and precarious livelihoods, the hospitality industry often becomes a temporary escape — an “easy-access” working environment for many artists. I have dedicated myself to an ongoing photographic documentation of the repetitiveness, the exhausting physical labor, the toxic environments, and the overall stressful conditions of working in low-wage service jobs within the gastronomic field. It is, in a way, a symbiosis—a thin line between art and life. Since my job is part of my life, it simultaneously inspires me artistically. This is what I do and what I see as an artist. Through this work, I aim to demonstrate how creative thought accumulates within and through the work environment itself, which inevitably provides a framework for perception and reflection. In abstract impressions, I process my own experiences of exhaustion and perseverance, of devotion and boredom. Drawing from my personal experiences, I seek to document and visualize my physical labor through what is left behind — symbolised by sweat stains on work clothes.
