Plates

“Plates” explores the ephemeral nature of art through the transient medium of food. Each plate becomes a canvas — a container for an artwork that disappears through consumption. Once the food, the artwork itself, is eaten, the plate’s purpose and meaning are transformed. What remains are traces: marks of presence and absence, of appetite, waste, and labor.

Through my ongoing photographic documentation, I capture abstract impressions for instance by the traces of guests in the form of their leftover dishes. As a waiter in a Michelin-starred restaurant, I perform in a space where every shift becomes a new performance. Many objects become part of this stage—napkins, glasses, plates, cutlery, menus, bottles, alcohol, and ice. Their sheer abundance, as well as their visual appeal, lies in their repetition—the same repetition that defines my own performance.“Plates” seeks beauty in what is often overlooked, revealing how the remnants of a meal can embody transformation, labor, and our shared human experience.
